Technical Writing

Good technical writing comes from really knowing two things; knowing your intended audience, and knowing the documents intended use. A good technical writer will always be mindful of these two things while they produce their work. I believe that my experience in technical writing and my ability to keep mindful of my documents use and audience makes me a technical writer able to produce clear, informative, and entertaining documents for your needs.
I have extensive experience in the computer software industry and have good technical knowledge of many major programming languages, software applications, and hardware platforms. I also have extensive technical experience in the general sciences including specialized knowledge in chemistry, molecular biology, and nanotechnology. Whatever your documentation needs, I will not only be able to write but to understand what I am writing from both an engineering and audience perspective.

Applications and platforms I have experience in:
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Visio
  • Adobe FrameMaker
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Quark Express
  • Net Objects Fusion - Visual HTML Design
  • Allaire HomeSite - Hand HTML Coding and Design

Experience

I have a number of years experience in technical writing. Past projects have included:
  • For a Fortune 500 Company, I served as managing editor of a large 200+ page software manual for a semi-technical audience. This included creating the design style and layout templates in Quark Express, managing the engineering and contract technical writing staff, technical writing of many of the chapters, setting writing and tutorial style, and performing final integration of all staff contributions into the final finished manual. This manual is available for download here as a 2.5MB PDF file.
  • For a medium size public company, I produced a software manual in FrameMaker for a technical audience that set the division standard for manuals and was very well received by the products customer base. I also authored internal acceptance testing procedures that were used as an integral part of the product delivery process.
  • For a small startup Internet company, I authored web site content and developed page layout for a non-technical audience. I also developed printed promotional material including event flyers and glossy two-sided promotional cards.
  • For a university research project, I produced a very well received technical paper on a nanotechnology research project involving the self assembly of nano-scale devices using DNA. An excerpt from this report is available here as a 725K Microsoft Word document.
